In 2016, two opposing high school baseball teams from Indianapolis — the Zionsville Eagles and Roncalli Rebels — faced off in the long-awaited championships. The announcer couldn't help but notice the pitcher for the Eagles, Jack Pilcher, was throwing an incredible game. It was clear Jack was setting his team up for a big win.
This was also Jack's final game of his high school career, and it was all tied up — until the very last play. The shortstop and third baseman collided when the Rebels hit a grounder toward third base… the runner beat the throw to first… and after nine impressive innings, Roncalli unexpectedly beat Zionsville 3-2.
Jack couldn't believe his last pitch in high school ended like this. "Right when it happened, I was in shock. I just kind of collapsed by the mound, face first. You can't feel much worse than I did. Especially being the pitcher at the end."
The Rebels began celebrating. But the team's catcher, Cody Smith, noticed a heartbroken Jack laying "almost lifelessly" by the mound.
Jack never expect what his opposing teammate did next.
