Bob Lives On His Own Now, But He Has Hundreds Of Friends On The Phone

It's a horrible fact of life that there are so many senior citizens out there who are left alone in their homes after the passing of their loved ones. Men and women alike, these members of the best generation often get left behind or ignored by the society that owes them so much.

Bob found himself madly in love with Cath back in 1939. Unfortunately, WWII broke out and the couple was ripped apart. Thankfully, Bob managed to survive the ordeal, but while he was still in the field, he sent a letter begging Cath to marry him. She happily replied to the adorable wedding proposal with a huge "Yes!"

For 65 years this couple stuck together, and for 65 years they remained the best of friends. But all too soon, Cath began to feel the horrible effects of Alzheimer's. Eventually, it got to the point where she could be looking right into Bob's eyes and not remember who he was.

Cath fought her hardest, but soon afterward she passed away in her sleep. Bob was devastated at the loss and had no idea how to function in his home alone. He wasn't sick, so didn't need to go to a special home, so he stayed put. He had children and grandchildren to call up, but, like a true Englishman, didn't want to appear too rude or imposing, even though he certainly wouldn't be.

Thankfully, Bob found out about Sport Relief's "Silver Hotline," a special service provided by donations that gives seniors a 24-hour helpline that always promises to have a friendly voice on the other end of the line.

While it will never replace his beautiful Cath, Bob now has a place to call if he ever just wants to talk. It can be about anything, from helpful directions to just keeping up with the local gossip.

Whoever came up with this idea is a true angel. While it's heartbreaking to know that there are so many stories like this in the world, we can all smile in the knowledge that something like this exists, and there are amazing people who will volunteer their own time to befriend men like Bob over the phone.
