Often, when children experience the death of a parent at a young age, they tend to take on some of the adult responsibilities by default.
Edward was 8 years old when his life changed forever. The young boy had already experienced a huge loss in his life when his dad died several years ago, but when his mother told him that she had terminal breast cancer, his entire world was rocked.
Edward adored his mother and spent every waking moment trying to make her proud. Even though she worked two jobs to try to support their family, Edward never minded doing the laundry or cleaning up the kitchen because he knew that his mom appreciated it and wanted him to have a normal life.
When Edward’s mom told him the life-changing news, he tried to put on his bravest face. He told her that they would try their hardest to fight the battle that was ahead of them together as a team.
Due to her illness, Edward’s mom had to cut down the amount of hours she was going to be working. Edward knew that her treatments and medications were expensive, so he tracked down a book in their den that was all about helping young entrepreneurs follow their dreams.

With permission from his mom, Edward followed the instructions set out in the book and wrote 50 notes that he needed to hand out to strangers at the mall. When he got to the mall, Edward handed one of his pieces of paper to a man who was serving in the Marines. The man wasn’t sure what the young boy was handing him, but he took it and began to read.
