When you spend a year or more planning your wedding day, you’d like for it to be as close to your vision as possible. For most brides, that vision includes a bomb bridal gown, supportive family and friends, and weather that doesn’t ruin the celebratory vibe. That last one though, is totally out of our control. Mother Nature doesn’t take direction well.
Still, brides in the United Kingdom seem to have discovered a ritual that is said to keep the rain clouds away so their weddings (and presumably their unions) can be full of sunshine. And the tradition has spread to other countries.
This wedding ritual recently gained traction with a bride named Haley, People reports. Weeks before her outdoor wedding at Centennial Vineyards Restaurant in Bowral, Australia, she read about a tradition. This custom states that burying a raw sausage the night before your wedding will keep the rain at bay. While the thought might have initially seemed outlandish, when the Bureau of Meteorology predicted “a chance of thunderstorms” for her courtyard wedding, Haley decided not to risk it.

She purchased some raw sausage, gathered her best friends, and covered the uncooked sausage in the dirt. As she did so, she spoke her wishes for the following day. “No rain tomorrow, baby. No thunderstorms, let’s goooo!”
Apparently, Mother Nature was listening. “It worked!!!” Haley said. “Blue skies and 29 degrees [Celsius], it was so hot! Not a single drop, and we danced the night away under the stars!” Since then, Haley’s been dubbed “the sausage bride.”

Haley’s results could have easily been a fluke. But other brides in other areas of the world claim they’ve replicated the results. Ally Chandler also buried the sausage in Australia, and it worked for her, too. Unlike Haley, Ally buried an entire pack of sausages, allowing her friends to bury their own processed meat along with her. In the caption of her TikTok video, she wrote, “Good weather secured.”
One bride in the UK was fortunate that her bridesmaid took it upon herself to travel with the sausage to keep the clouds away.

Whether the sausages really are sending some type of message to the atmosphere or not, we can see why this superstition has caught on. It’s a little silly, a little magical and could serve as a cute pre-wedding day bonding activity for any wedding party. Superstitions don’t have to make sense, they just require our participation. That’s half the fun.
