A family is divided after a woman won’t let her brother’s fiancée wear her late mother’s wedding dress. The woman posted in the AITA forum after catching flak for her decision. The original poster, 32, explained that she lost her mom four years ago, and inherited a lot of her things, the wedding dress being one of them.
“My mom and I were incredibly close, and she always talked about how much she wanted me to wear her dress when I got married. I’m not married yet, but I’ve been saving the dress for my special day.”

Well, the woman’s 29-year-old brother is getting married next year, and his fiancée asked to wear the dress.
“She said it would mean a lot to her because she never got to meet my mom, and she wants to feel connected to her on the big day,” the OP wrote. “I understand that it’s a sweet gesture, but I don’t feel comfortable with her wearing something that’s so sentimental to me, especially since my mom always wanted me to wear it.”
The fiancée ended up getting upset and calling the woman selfish when she voiced that she wasn’t OK with it.
“Now my brother is upset with me too, saying it’s ‘just a dress’ and that I’m ruining their wedding over something that’s not a big deal. I offered to help her find a similar dress or even incorporate a piece of my mom’s dress into her own gown, but she refused,” she explained. “Our family is now divided, with some saying I’m in the right and others saying I should let it go for the sake of family harmony.”

Many Reddit users sided with the woman.
One person commented: “NTA. If it were ‘just a dress’ like your brother says, your future SIL wouldn’t make such a big deal out of your refusal. This is your dress to wear some day – or not. But it is your special connection. Not hers.”
“NTA,” another person wrote. “Family harmony is a myth entitled people use to justify their abuse. Your mom wanted YOU to wear her dress, not a stranger she never met. If your brother thinks its ‘just a dress’ then he can buy his fiancee her own dress.”
A lot of users also urged the woman to hide the dress.
“Take precautions and make sure the dress is a safe location because people can act really crazy about stuff like this, especially the entitled type,” one person said.
“Please please please take that dress to a friend’s house that your brother doesn’t know,” someone else wrote. “Your FSIL is already divided the family because she didn’t get her way. Who knows what she will do to get that dress.”
