A Mom Saves Her Daughter’s Life By Doing This With A Car Seat

When a stranger saw this little girl’s bruised chest, she was understandably concerned. When she found out how she got those bruises, she took a photo and posted it online — and now it’s going viral.

After suffering an intense car accident, you'll be happy to know that these bruises are a good thing.

Yep, those battle scars are a sign that mommy was looking out for her little one.

If her mother hadn't correctly clipped on the child's car seat, we don't even want to think about what could have happened instead of a few chest bruises.

Like they say: The devil is in the details. After I read about the mom who saved her son by sucking snake poison out of his leg, I didn't need anymore proof that moms are everyday superheroes. Yet, here we are.

When Heather Starr saw the girl's chest after the accident, she had so much praise for the mom that she had to take a photo and spread the word.

Car seat safety is truly that important. It makes me CRAZY when I see kids’ chest clips on their bellies. This is why. This little girl is walking away from a car accident with some uncomfortable chest bruising. A couple inches difference and she wouldn’t have been walking away at all.  It’s. THAT. Important.” Starr wrote on Facebook.

"This is a 3 year old girl who was just in a car accident. The bruising on her chest is from her chest clip on her 5 point harness. Notice it was correctly positioned on her chest, at armpit level right between her nipples. Clearly, there was some force t

Correctly positioning the car seat clip, illustrated in the photo below, can be the difference between saving a child's life and potentially causing more damage.

According to SafetyFirst.org, 73 precent of car seats are incorrectly installed. Meanwhile, a correctly used car seat (as we saw in this story), can reduce the risk of a child's death by 71 percent.

Here is an easy car seat checklist provided by SafeKids.org:

  1. Right Seat. This is an easy one. Check the label on your car seat to make sure it’s appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height. Like milk, your car seat has an expiration date. Just double check the label on your car seat to make sure it is still safe.

  2. Right Place. Kids are VIPs, just ask them. We know all VIPs ride in the back seat, so keep all children in the back seat until they are 13.

  3. Right Direction. You want to keep your child in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible, usually until around age 2. When he or she outgrows the seat, move your child to a forward-facing car seat. Make sure to attach the top tether after you tighten and lock the seat belt or lower anchors.

  4. Inch Test. Once your car seat is installed, give it a good shake at the base. Can you move it more than an inch side to side or front to back? A properly installed seat will not move more than an inch.

  5. Pinch Test. Make sure the harness is tightly buckled and coming from the correct slots (check car seat manual). Now, with the chest clip placed at armpit level, pinch the strap at your child’s shoulder. If you are unable to pinch any excess webbing, you’re good to go.
