This Cat Broke A World Record For One Very Heartbreaking Reason…

There are any number of reasons why an animal might reach a weight that could be considered unhealthy. Sometimes it’s overeating, and other times something health-related like a thyroid issue.

Ensuring their health and safety often means implementing the same methods used by us humans to regulate our weight: physical exercise, smaller portions, and support from those around us. These are the tactics that were implemented to help Moggie Garfield, the world’s fattest cat. The typical weight of a cat is roughly 10–15 pounds (depending on their size and age), says Dr. Marie Fecteau of the North Shore Animal League of America in New York, a nonprofit no-kill shelter where he was treated. Garfield weighed a whopping 38 pounds when he was taken in by a shelter following the passing of his owner.

“Garfield is definitely the biggest cat I’ve ever seen,” she says.

Staff at the vet put him on a strict diet in hopes of helping him lose between 15–20 pounds (no more sneaking treats for this feline). They also helped him do small “exercises” like rotating his arms to help him regain full mobility. Because Garfield wasn’t “keen” on moving, they’re tasked with dreaming up ways to help get him exercise while he’s stationary.

We wish this chubby fur-baby a swift and speedy recovery. Be sure to SHARE this video to bring attention to the great work by the folks at North Shore Animal League!
