David and Jessica have been dating for three years. In love but both unable to find work, the couple has been sleeping in a tent outside on a Minneapolis campground.
For weeks, the homeless couple had been trying to get married. Sadly, every church they called refused, claiming they didn't marry people "off the street." That's when David called an old friend — Police Sergeant Katie Blackwell.
David and Sgt. Blackwell have quite the history. A while back, Sgt. Blackwell was chasing two men who stole someone's cell phone. She nabbed one of the men, and David appeared out of nowhere like a superhero, catching the other. He earned a certificate for his bravery, and the homeless man and police officer formed an unlikely friendship. When David called Sgt. Blackwell to ask if she knew anyone who could help him marry the love of his life, he was surprised to learn that the Sergeant was also an ordained minister! That's right — when no one else would marry David and Jessica, Sgt. Blackwell was happy to return the favor. She happily married David and Jessica herself.
"It's been fun chasing down bad guys together, but I hope from here on out, you're just chasing down your children," she said during the heartwarming ceremony. We've seen officers perform acts of kindness before, and this one is no exception.
