There wasn't a dry eye at Cook Children's Neonatal Unit as Kristi Warriner and Justin Nelson exchanged vows with their prematurely-born son serving as the most adorable ring bearer. This wasn't exactly the day Warriner had dream of… it was better, she said.
The couple had postponed their wedding when Warriner became a high risk pregnancy because of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. (JJ was born 25 weeks early on September 2; his twin, Colt Austin, died in utero.) After the couple spent many sleepless nights caring for JJ, who was born with a chronic lung disease and unable to leave the NICU, they came up with an amazing idea.
The couple decided to wed at the hospital, and the staff eagerly helped to arrange the NICU's first-ever wedding. Then, on Nov. 11, the couple exchanged vows in JJ’s room, surrounded by family and their 8-year-old daughter. The family is praying for a miracle and hope he'll be able to come home by Christmas. We're rooting for you, JJ!
