This DIY Piñata Cake Hides A Candy Surprise Inside

Growing up, the two best parts of any birthday party were the piñata and the cake.

And while there certainly are hundreds of different ways to make a delicious birthday cake, it never dawned on me that I could make a cake that looked and functioned exactly like a real piñata!

I found this project on Imgur from user megpi, and I couldn't believe how amazing the final product looked. Just like this colorful, rainbow bombe cake, this piñata cake is almost too beautiful to eat.

Scroll through below to see just how creative this cake DIYer was in creating a stunning dessert with a tasty, candy-filled surprise. I actually can't believe how much this cake looks like a real piñata.

And when they cut into the center? Let's just say I'm requesting one of these for my next birthday.

To make an incredible piñata cake, this DIYer modeled it directly after an actual donkey-shaped piñata. Using the real one, this Imgur user created templates for the different portions of the body.

This DIYer writes, "I used these templates to cut out the cake," which appears to be of the funfetti variety.

This Imgur user also decided to use cardboard cutouts between the cake layers for stability. They even cut holes in the cardboard so that they could run support dowels through the center of the cake.

The user writes, "Each piece was assembled with butter cream between each layer of cake. The neck was trimmed to be smaller at the top, and the head rounded out before crumb coating in buttercream. The body was filled tightly with candy, and the leg pieces doweled before crumb coating."

To mimic the colorful exterior of the piñata, this clever DIYer created five different colors of buttercream.

Each individual color was placed into a paper cornet to make the accuracy of decorating with icing much easier to control.

While layers of cardboard were used underneath the head and the neck for support, the majority of the donkey was comprised of cake. More regular butter cream was used during the assembly process.

This DIYer writes, "The body and neck have their own support dowels, and one long dowel from the bottom of the body to the top of the head."

With the piñata cake looking incredible, it was time to add a few finishing touches including ears made of cardboard and a tail constructed from streamers.

The donkey's bridle was made from edible fondant, and two small black eyes were added to truly match the appearance of the original piñata.

But, of course, the most exciting part was cutting into the cake. Removing a slice from the torso, candy began to spill out, just like with a real piñata!
