Dolly Parton Sings “I Will Always Love You” To A Special Someone

Dolly Parton's 1970s ballad "I Will Always Love You" is a timeless classic and easily one of the most popular songs of all time.

Aside from later becoming a hit for the late Whitney Houston, it's also been covered countless times, even by singers who weren't alive at the time it was released.

But it isn't just a beautiful love song that's made its way through several generations; it also has a meaningful backstory attached to it. It speaks to the important time in Parton's life when she took the step to advance her solo career.

On February 19th, 1974, Parton announced that she'd be parting ways with fellow country star Porter Wagoner, with whom she had been performing since the 1960s. That's why she wrote the song.

Sure, she went on to be an international superstar, but through the lyrics, it's clear that the decision was a difficult one. It also hurt their relationship immensely. According to Rolling Stone, Wagoner sued Parton "for breach of contract," and the two didn't speak to each other for years after their split.

That's why it was a monumental moment when they reconnected decades later. In 2007, Parton sang it to Wagoner at the Grand Ole Opry, and it was a moment filled with emotion.
