Every few years, a new dance craze will sweep the world with its catchy steps inspiring us all to bust a move. When I was growing up, I knew I couldn't set foot inside my local roller rink without knowing the "Macarena." These days, a new toe-tapping trend seems to arrive every few weeks, and it can be difficult to keep up. I thought kids were still bopping around with the "Whip/Nae Nae" before realizing I was way behind the times.
Instead, you can find teens hitting play on an old 1996 track from Ghost Town DJ titled "My Boo" and breaking out a vintage move known as the "running man." The dance was made popular by Janet Jackson when she used it as part of her choreography for her hit tune "Rhythm Nation" in 1989. The flashback fad might seem like a strange choice, but it has sparked interest in everyone from basketball players to police officers who have uploaded videos of themselves performing the silly steps. It's even being used as a fun challenge with individuals daring their friends to embrace looking a bit ridiculous.
But how did it all start? Leave it to talk show host extraordinaire Ellen DeGeneres to get to the bottom of things. The funny lady invited the two young men, high school students from New Jersey, who kicked the whole thing off to explain what inspired them to start grooving. She also brought along the two basketball players from Maryland who made the whole thing go viral.
Of course, Ellen can't let them go without a surprise or two!
