Growing up, my mother's family translated their love for gardening into armfuls of ripe fruits and vegetables. She and her siblings cultivated tomatoes, squash, and eggplant that would later be cooked into family meals. Sometimes, they even offered up leftover fruits and veggies to their neighbors and friends!
First and foremost, gardening emphasizes the importance of community. It teaches you the value of sharing — whether in the form of offering up extra crops or planting gorgeous greenery for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.
Gardening also trains you to think ahead and care responsibly for other living organisms. The life lessons this hobby has to offer are truly endless.
I am so thankful that my mother has instilled the same appreciation for horticulture in me. Although I live in a somewhat rainy city, I have learned how to sustain my own miniature cactus farm. Beyond caring for my plant babies, I often pluck fresh basil leaves to sprinkle over slices of my grandfather's famous homegrown tomatoes. Yum!
