If you filled your tank up lately, you've probably noticed the increase in cost. Nope, you're not imagining it. There's been a surge in gas prices recently, and Christine Romans from NBC made an appearance on Today on April 23, 2024, to break down why the costs are on the rise. According to her, it was $3.67 overnight as far as the national average. She also noted that it was around the same price this time last year. "The reason why prices are going up is because there's this seasonal shift in the kind of gas that we burn," she said.
"We burn a different gas in our cars in the summer and so these refineries have maintenance and upkeep that goes on and then they switch to the seasonal blend," she continued. She added that a peak usually tends to happen around April or May.
Christine went on to explain how surprised she is that gas prices haven't skyrocketed more, however, given what's going on in the world. "If you look at gas prices today exactly where they were a year ago, what's different? You've got a major, major confrontation in the Middle East," she said. "So that is a surprise to me and something to keep watching."
