Joyce Kosturko has already spent eight years as a driver for Bedford City School District, but in those eight years she has never encountered anything quite like this. And the driver's heroism was caught on the bus's security camera.
She was letting a student out of the bus when a black car pulled up next to her. A man got out of the car and walked right up to the bus's open doors. The angry man claimed Kosturko hit his car with the bus, but she denied it. After all, she says the kids still riding with her would have felt it and would have told her. The man becomes more irate and tries to board the bus.
But watch the video very closely. Kosturko doesn't want to let that happen and raises her right arm to block him. He proceeds to lift the 67-year-old driver's arm and sit down. A few seconds later, his female companion joins him on the bus. It looks like a frightening situation, one that could potentially put the driver and the kids in danger.
Thankfully, the angry driver and his female companion ended up leaving the bus. Kosturko immediately called the police and her supervisor. Now, the suspects have been identified and charged. The children are safe, and Kosturko escaped a physical confrontation, suffering only a scratch. But it's how she deterred the angry driver that's amazing: She and all the drivers were trained in nonviolent crisis intervention, so she was able to use her knowledge to save herself and the kids!
