There are few people in the world as truly special and unique as Jenny Slate. She's a hilarious comedian and actress, and she recently became an author, as well, with the publication of her new book, Little Weirds. Jenny can really do it all. Plus, she just seems incredibly down to earth and relatable. There's no question why Jenny's fan base seems to grow larger all the time.
Jenny just added a new important milestone to her list, too. She recently got engaged to her boyfriend, Ben Shattuck, and it turns out engagements can also be funny. At least the way that this hilarious lady does them.
On Tuesday, Jenny appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where the comedian gave a play-by-play of the event. It involves a castle, romance, and a lot of salami. Of course, it was laugh-out-loud hilarious, and the whole ordeal just makes us love her even more.
Jenny Slate first came onto our screens (and into our hearts) when she starred as the hilarious and bratty sister of Jean-Ralphio, Mona-Lisa, in Parks and Recreation. She was massively entertaining on the show, and since then, she's kept busy with a variety of projects.
Jenny has kept up with her comedy routines, and she even had a recent comedy special drop on Netflix called Stage Fright. The comedian has also become an author. She told Vulture in an interview that writing her book, Little Weirds, saved her life.
"I think this book is the start of me saying that this is the way that I really speak to myself, celebrate myself, and that it’s okay to just call something out and gesture to the world and say, 'This is what it looks like and feels like to me,” she said. The book is an honest, vulnerable portrayal of Jenny, and it's clear she wants people to know the real her.
She continued, "I’ve always kind of labored under the agenda of comedy, and have made it look and feel light, but comedy has some strict rules," she said. "You have to be funny, or at least funny some of the time. In my book, I think there are a lot of parts that are funny, and I am a person who has humor in her naturally, but this book represents me doing enough growing and changing to have found this voice, to have found the volume."
The Little Weirds author appeared on the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night. On the show, she talked about her book, her Netflix special, and everything else that's been happening lately in her life. That included one very special occurrence.
Slate recently got engaged to her boyfriend, Ben Shattuck. Of course, it was lovely and romantic, Slate revealed. But it was also utterly hilarious. Because of course it was — Jenny Slate was involved.
Jenny detailed the proposal for a hysterical Jimmy Fallon. "We were in France," she said. "And as it happens when you're in France, we came upon an abandoned castle. This happened to me! This is not a lie. We get to the castle, and it's like, 'Oh, it's locked.' But then, of course, we push the gate because we're curious."
In the castle in France, Jenny and Ben came across a group of elderly people having a picnic. They, too, had packed a picnic lunch, so they sat down to enjoy it. Then Ben started to say sweet words to Jenny, and she knew what was coming.
"I had chosen many of the groceries for the picnic, which means that it was just, like, all salami," she shared. "I love a sausage!" But then things got serious, even with all the deli meat strewn about.
"He's holding my hand," she told Jimmy. "He's saying, you know, these beautiful things to me. And all of a sudden, he's like, 'Jenny, you mean so much to me. I love you so much.' I'm like, 'He's about to propose to me! I can feel it coming!'"
Sometimes, in those moments, ya know, the ones that are supposed to be perfect, nerves get the best of us. It seems that may have been what happened to Jenny, because her reaction was a bit strange. And utterly hilarious.
"I had a moment to kind of, like, calm myself. Like, could have been the Audrey Hepburn of the situation, like very demure," the actress said. "And he's like, 'Will you be my wife?' And of course, at that moment, when I could've been like, 'Yes,' or whatever, I have somehow nervously stuffed, like, all of the sausage into my mouth and I'm like, 'Bleh!'"
It's such a funny scene to picture, especially with Jenny's epic description. Of course, she did manage to eventually get out a joyful "yes" through a mouthful of meat. She is now happily engaged.
"Beautiful memory," Jenny quipped to Jimmy. Honestly, it's so Jenny, so we couldn't agree more. We can't wait to see what else is to come from this funny girl who makes every moment memorable.
