If you’re a movie lover, you may remember actress Keke Palmer from her starring turn in the 2006 movie Akeelah and the Bee.
Since then, that adorable little girl has grown up into a well-respected actress, and is taking Hollywood by storm with her lead role in the Fox dramedy Scream Queens. Like her contemporary Zendaya, she’s making a name for herself as young, up-and-coming performer to watch.
Perhaps fittingly, she chose to use her Halloween costume this year to pay homage to another young, up-and-comer — one the world lost too soon. Now Palmer’s costume is making waves across the internet, as she resurrects the image of Aaliyah, the superstar who passed away in 2001, when she was just 22 years old.
Like Judy Garland, Aaliyah was a prodigious talent in the music industry who died far too young. She perished in a plane crash in the Caribbean, and is still loved and remembered to this day.
Now, Palmer is drawing lots of attention for a series of Instagram posts where she channels Aaliyah so closely that they could almost be sisters.
Keke Palmer, the 22-year-old actress best known for starring roles in Akeelah and the Bee, True Jackson, VP, and Scream Queens, is now on her way to another starring turn: a 2015 reincarnation of the great R&B singer Aaliyah, who passed away after her plane crashed in 2001.
Aaliyah, who was also 22 at the time of her accident, was a talented hip-hop, soul, and R&B performer who was first discovered on Star Search in 1989. Her collaborations with performers like R. Kelly, Timbaland, and Missy Elliot helped her shoot to stardom, and she was on of the most beloved musicians of her generation.
In a fitting homage to Aaliyah's legacy, Palmer decided to recreate a look from one of Aaliyah's best known music videos, "Try Again," released in 2000. In the video, the pop star wears low-rise leather pants, a sparkly white crop-top, and a glittering, gem-encrusted choker, all of which Palmer recreated for her top-to-toe tribute, with the help of the Scream Queens wardrobe team.
Impressively, Palmer didn't stop at the outfit. While her look was a spot-on imitation of Aaliyah's ensemble in the video, Palmer took it one step further, and also learned part of the dance in the video. It's pretty impressive to see those iconic moves recreated 15 years after the video's release!
