When Jason Kunewa was out at sea looking for false killer whales, he didn't know that he would have the chance to interact with one of the ocean's oldest and most majestic creatures.
Not far from the boat, a leatherback sea turtle was swimming close to the surface. But Kunewa was disturbed by what he saw: The 700-lbs. creature had kelp wrapped around its neck. That's when he knew that he had to help the turtle. He grabbed a knife and jumped into the ocean.
Luckily, the GoPro camera he was holding captured the action. He swims up to the turtle with the knife in hand, and tries to cut away as much kelp as he can. While he didn't get all of it off the animal, he was able to cut a good portion of it off, and the animal was able to swim away.
Kunewa has a special connection to turtles like these: His grandmother and aunt also spent time trying to save them. To his family, the turtle is sacred, and it's their symbol. He even has a drawing of one tattooed on his inner arm!
