The unthinkable happened in Ohio. A mother so consumed with financial burdens shot and killed her son, husband, father, and self just moments before the police arrived to evict the family from its home.
Theresa Cain, 46, was named as the shooter in this heartbreaking case by the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office. Her son has been identified as 13-year-old Ethan Cain, her husband Steve Cain, and her father William Felton. Theresa also shot her daughter, Samantha Cain, who was found alive and rushed to the hospital.
The shots rang out just as police were arriving. They discovered the bodies upstairs in the house. A .38-caliber revolver was found on the downstairs sofa and is believed to be the murder weapon. It is also believed that Theresa’s family members were awake and aware at the time of the shooting.
“You would think there would be resources for someone like them, but I think she kept this a very close secret. Hopefully, Samantha recovers and can help fill in some blanks,” Sheriff Steve Leahy said.
Samantha is in a coma but has a good chance of pulling through.
Superintendent Tracey Miller of the New Richmond School District, where both Samantha and Ethan attended school, spoke out about the tragedy. “We are stunned and saddened by the loss of Ethan Cain. Ethan was loved by students and staff alike and his loss leaves a tremendous hole in the heart of our district and our community,” she said.
“We ask you to keep Ethan’s sister, a recent New Richmond High School graduate, Samantha Cain, in your thoughts as well. The entire New Richmond community is behind her in this fight,” she concluded.
