About six weeks after he was born, Nolan Sensintaffar started losing a concerning amount of weight despite being well fed. His parents did all they could before taking him for genetic testing. That’s when they learned the boy had a rare genetic disorder.
The doctors in St. Louis told the Sensintaffars that there was no hope for their baby boy.
“They refused to do much more with him,” mother Heather Sensintaffar told Nebraska’s KETV. “Just enjoy him while we could."
But Heather and her husband didn’t want to give up hope and brought their son to a recommended doctor in Omaha, NE, named David Mercer.
Like the doctor in Pennsylvania who resuscitated a man thought to be dead, Dr. Mercer felt something could be done for little Nolan. He immediately started treating the boy. A few years later, Mercer knew a critical surgery needed to be done, so he performed a quadruple transplant for Nolan's small bowel, large bowel, liver, and pancreas.
Now, little Nolan is doing better than ever and mom Heather also hopes other parents will learn from her experience.
"I always tell parents, 'you have to follow your heart,'" she said. "Don't ever give up until you know."
