10 Things You Should Absolutely Never Do While Kissing

Do you remember what your first kiss was like? If you're like most people, it was probably a little bit awkward, albeit sweet. Maybe your first kiss was very innocent at a very young age. Maybe it was with someone you thought you would love for the rest of your life when you were in high school, and it made your heart soar like never before.

As great as kissing is, it can get a little weird at times. Often that means that you're not kissing the right person, but sometimes it means that you just haven't clicked yet.

Kissing can also be gross if you're not careful. After all, you are fundamentally swapping saliva with another person.

But if you avoid these 10 things, kissing can be pretty darn amazing. The overarching rule, of course, is to embrace the moment and enjoy yourself!

Sure, it's easy to get distracted every now and again, but if you start to think about all the things you have to do the next day, your partner might start to wonder what's making you so distant. Chances are they'll take it personally and think it's their fault. You can balance your checkbook and make a to-do list later.

2. Go In With A Military-Level Strategy

You can't plan what's going to happen step-by-step when you're kissing someone. Try not to think too hard and go with the flow, as cheesy as that sounds. The moment you start over-analyzing what's going on is when kissing becomes less fun and more of an awkward, saliva-covered chore. Yeah, don't think about saliva either.

3. Turn It Into A Staring Contest

There's nothing weirder than kissing with eyes open for a prolonged period of time. Intermittent eye contact is good, but unless you've somehow both come to the conclusion that constant eye contact is what you're into, close your eyes and take in the moment.

4. Approach All Kisses The Same Way

Everyone likes a little something different. Pay attention to how your partner kisses and take cues from that. People often kiss how they want to be kissed, so if he or she begins to take the lead, don't be afraid to follow. Also, don't be afraid to ask what your partner likes!

5. Stay In One Place

By that I mean don't just stick to the lips, because there are many other kissable places. Just sticking to the mouth can get old, and frankly very exhausting. Try out the neck, ears, shoulders, eyelids, or cheeks. Of course, each spot can mean a different thing, but when combined in succession, it can be a roller coaster of passion and emotion.

6. Use Too Much Tongue

Kissing isn't about trying to stick your tongue down your partner's throat, so just don't do it. Use tongue sparingly, and if you have to think about whether or not you're using too much tongue, you probably are. The answer? Stop thinking so much and let your passion take over!

7. Move Too Fast

It doesn't matter if you've been with your partner one week or 30 years: you should never ever do anything without mutual consent! If you're kissing and you want to move on to other things, make sure that you're both really on board.

8. Let Your Partner Do All The Work

Unless it's understood that one of you is taking control, don't leave all the initiative to your partner. It's all about give and take, so if he or she is leaning in, meet half way.

9. Pass Gum Back And Forth

This is a move that high school kids pull, and it's downright yucky. Think of all the food particles and other mouth germs that have accumulated in the wad of gum. If you want to share candies, that's up to you — get as creative as you want! But do everyone a favor and keep old chewing gum out of it.

10. Tease Too Much

Some teasing is encouraged, but don't take it to the point where you're pulling away every few seconds, or else it just becomes annoying rather than fun. I can't stress enough how much kissing depends on rolling with the tide and doing what your heart tells you to. If you're kissing the right person, everything will balance out on its own!
