A pair of would-be grandparents in Haridwar, India, are suing their adult son for $675,000. His crime? Not giving them grandchildren in the seven years that he and his wife have been married.
Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad filed the suit in an attempt to recover money they have spent on their son throughout the years, especially money that was spent on his wedding and for his education.
Sanjeev explained, "We want a grandson or a granddaughter within a year or compensation, because I have spent my life’s earnings on my son’s education. The main issue is that at this age we need a grandchild, but these people (my son and daughter-in-law) have an attitude that they don’t think about us."
He continued by explaining that the two just assumed grandchildren would follow after their son's wedding. "We got him married in the hope we would have the pleasure of becoming grandparents. It has been six years since their marriage. It feels as if despite having everything we have nothing."
Sanjeev also says that he has spent a lot of money, to the tune of $65,000, for his son to train to become a pilot in the United States. After their son came back to India in 2007, he wasn't able to get a job as a pilot right away.
While he did end up getting a job and marrying his wife in 2016, his parents remain disappointed that the two have so far not produced any grandchildren to kept them entertained during their retirement.
Their lawyer claims to have filed the suit on grounds of "mental cruelty." As AK Srivastava put it, "It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. They had been waiting for years to become grandparents."
