In the video below, "do not disturb" sign hangs from a hotel door, candies are left beside the bed, and a cliché sign promises "suite dreams."
If you travel as often as I do, then surely you know most (cheap) hotels look exactly the same.
There's the inevitable hard bed, a hard pillow, body wash so fragrant you'd rather use potpourri, and that scary looking complimentary breakfast. My favorite hotel cliché of all is when you're promised "luxury," "paradise," and an "escape" only to arrive in a dingy, dull room with wallpaper that hasn't been updated since the '60s. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect real luxury for $50 a night, but no one likes being lied to.
For once I'd like for a hotel to advertise itself as, "Kind of Smelly. Kind of Dirty. But a Decent Place To Sleep. Certainly Better Than Your Car. (You Probably Won't Get Stabbed Here.)"
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker PES seems a little miffed about hotel clichés too. In this short film called Swan Song, PES illustrates his frustrations with uninspiring hotel rooms in the most creative way. Two swans (made of dirty towels) romantically swim across a hotel mattress. They lovingly nuzzle each other until something very unexpected happens.
Let's just say we didn't see that one coming…
