Playgrounds seem like they are a safe haven for children to have good, clean fun. However, during summer there are serious hidden dangers.
Amanda Hann, an Australian mom from Adelaide, was distraught when her 1-year-old daughter, Ella, got on the merry-go-round on a hot day. What seemed like an innocent ride turned into a disaster.
The hot sun against the metal playground equipment left her daughter with severe burns, permanent scarring, and several trips to the hospital.
It may be scary to know that there are so many ordinary hazards surrounding our children. I can't help but recall a boy who was asphyxiated by cinnamon, but as a parent, it's essential to take any necessary precautions.
“Several trips to the hospital for treatment and constant dressing, not to mention the care and strain on us at home to keep the area clean and dressed 24/7 with a highly active toddler,” Hann said. “She is only one year old and is now scarred for life and this has ruined her whole summer as she cannot do water activities or play in sandpits etc. because the area is so sensitive.”
It’s important that parents remember to check the surface of playground equipment to ensure they are safe for children.
KWTX advises to, “Watch for uncoated metal equipment, or metal equipment where the heat-reducing coating has rubbed off. Also be mindful of dark-colored plastics and rubbers, especially the surfacing under and around the playground equipment.”
While any child can experience a playground burn, children ages 2 and under are especially at risk.
