A pregnant woman was alarmed when she noticed that surfaces she touched were turning blue. In a video uploaded on TikTok and Instagram, the woman shared that her toilet seat, clothes she wore, and her sheets all had blue stains on them. "As you do, you jump on Google and me and my partner were Googling until about 1 a.m.," she said in the video.
She was a bit relieved to find out that other women have developed the strange symptom, which is not necessarily linked to pregnancy.
"Yesterday I went to the toilet and when I got off the toilet seat it was blue," the woman, Keisha, said in the video. "Literally blue. And I was not even wearing any blue yesterday."
Other pregnant women have reported turning toilet seats blue while pregnant, but Keisha explained that in her case, the phenomenon was not limited to toilet seats; the clothes she wore and the sheets she slept on also turned blue. "I'm genuinely baffled because I thought I was becoming an Avatar," Keisha said.
According to Healthline, many of the reports of blue toilet seats come from pregnant people — but this strange symptom has also been reported by people who are not pregnant, and it's not necessarily more common during pregnancy.
In some cases, blue toilet seats might be explained by chromhidrosis, a rare condition. Because chromhidrosis is rare, it's unlikely that every person who has turned a toilet seat blue has the condition. The main symptom of chromhidrosis, according to Medical News Today, is colored sweat; it could be blue, green, yellow or another color. With chromhidrosis, staining would probably not be limited to toilet seats, and would also cause stains on other surfaces like clothing and bedding.

In her video, Keisha explains that she's wearing blue to avoid changing the color of the clothes she's wearing. In the comments, some people shared that the same thing happened to them.
"IT HAPPENED TO ME!!" one TikTok user wrote. "I thought i was turning into a smurf."
Another wrote: "I had this happen to me during the height of hormonal imbalance, wasn't even pregnant just sweating & turning surfaces/fabrics blue."
Today.com reported that Keisha was diagnosed with chromhidrosis. Dr. Abigail Waldman, a dermatologist, told the outlet that an increase in sweating might cause the condition to become more noticeable during pregnancy even though the condition is not caused by pregnancy.
Keisha has also created many videos in which she talks about managing polycystic ovary syndrome.
