Destyni Tyree was voted prom queen, she's captain of the cheerleading squad, and she has a 4.0 grade point average. She's a star student with a bright future, but that hasn't come easily. About two years ago, Destyni's mother lost her job. The family struggled to make ends meet and was forced to move into Washington, D.C.'s largest homeless shelter. Destyni began to act out due to the stress, but once she transferred to S.T.A.Y. High School, with the help of caring teachers, she was able to shift her priorities.
She worked tirelessly to graduate on time. Destyni took classes online, on Saturdays, and even during summer. Although enduring all the extra schoolwork, she worked 25 hours a week at an ice cream shop to help out her family, while still taking part in extracurricular activities like cheerleading. The 16-year-old managed to graduate early in just two years! What's even more stunning, she received a full scholarship to Potomac State College of West Virginia University. Destyni revealed to ABC that she works hard because she is the oldest of her siblings and wants them to see it's possible to reach for the stars.
“Accomplished,” Destyni told ABC. “That’s how I feel right now. If you work hard enough, if you have that drive, if you have that motivation, it gets a lot better.”
