I am continually stunned by the incredible sacrifices that the brave young men and women in our armed forces make every single day.
They spend their youth training and fighting. Many of them come home victorious, and ready to help their fellow Americans further, like this veteran who rescued two children from a house fire.
But for others, the trip home is often accompanied by mental and physical scars that can only be overcome with time and love, as in the case of wounded warrior Taylor Morris and his devoted fiancée.
Like Mr. Morris, Cpl. Kyle Hockenberry is a vet who returned home from war with substantial hurdles to overcome. After enlisting right out of high school, Mr. Hockenberry was injured by an IED while serving in Afghanistan in 2011.
His heart stopped while he was being evacuated, and he ultimately lost three of his limbs — both legs and one arm. He spent months of his life in the hospital.
But despite his injuries, Kyle is optimistic about the future. According to his family, “He’s real humble. He really doesn’t like the word ‘hero.’ So we call him our miracle.”
And his life since then has been miraculous. While in rehab, he connected with a woman named Ashley on Facebook. She later became his wife.
And now, thanks to the unparalleled work of the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Tunnels to Towers project, the young couple is now living in a brand-new, fully functional smart home, where they hope to raise a family. Learn more about their incredible story in the video below. Please note that this video contains footage that some viewers may find disturbing.
