The 1980s were certainly a strange and fascinating era for pop music. With the introduction of MTV at the beginning of the decade, along with an emphasis on more electronic and synthesized sounds, new acts made their debuts with outlandish videos streaming on our TV screens. Whether they were sporting curious hairstyle choices, or a pair of especially tight pants, they definitely never failed to entertain.
Rick Astley was one of those performers who rose through the ranks with his 1987 chart-topping hit titled "Never Gonna Give You Up." By just reading those words, chances are that you already have the catchy song playing in your head.
The tune recently found a whole new level of popularity, but it had nothing to do with Astley's surprisingly soulful vocals. The England native became a household name all over again when an internet trend known as "Rickrolling" began duping unsuspecting users with links that seemed to lead to legitimate sources, only to then wind up on the catchy song's YouTube page.
Astley took the joke in good-natured stride and even performed a live version of the trick at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2008. But now, he's reminding us that there's real talent behind the jest with the premiere of his newest single, "Keep Singing."
I'll be honest: I totally expected him to break out into his signature song halfway through the video, but I can assure you that isn't the case. Instead, I was simply stunned by how truly incredible his voice remains!
