“Why Ken?” is what Ryan Gosling's kids wondered when they heard about their dad's role in the upcoming film Barbie. Gosling told the New York Times that when his daughters play with dolls, they do not call them Barbie or Ken and were confused when they found out Ryan would be playing Ken.
"They don’t even call him Ken. One of them is named Darrell. And Darrell works at a grocery store," Ryan explained to the publication.
His daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, did help him prepare for his role in the film though, he shared with PEOPLE.
Ryan shared that he didn't have Barbies as a kid, so he learned more about the brand through his daughters.
Although Ryan told PEOPLE that his daughters helped him prepare for one of the scenes, Amada, 7, and Esmeralda, 8, just don't seem that interested in Ken.
"I think they're confused as to why I would want to play Ken. They have no use for Ken," the actor shared.
"(My daughters' dolls) all have complicated back stories, lives, relationships, hopes, dreams," Ryan said. "It’s incredible how intricate the world is that they’ve created.”
He added that his daughters do not call Barbie by her name. Instead, they decided to name her "Gym Class."
“And Gym Class met Darrell at the grocery store, but Gym Class, she’s focusing on herself right now," Ryan explained.
