A mom on TikTok is facing criticism after taking her toddler's colorful toy Christmas tree and spray painting in neutral tones. In a video shared on TikTok, the mom, Natalie Powell, showed how she used spray paint to make her kid's toy match her aesthetic, causing some to label her as a "sad beige mom." "Go ahead and call me crazy or a sad beige mom for what I'm about to do, but today I'm giving the Step 2 My First Christmas Tree a total makeover," the mom began in her video.
"I can already hear you thinking that I'm going to ruin my toddler's Christmas by painting over these colors," she continued.
The mom justified her decision by saying that her daughter loves playing with "brown cardboard boxes" and "clear plastic water bottles." Therefore, Natalie believes her daughter is "a neutral girlie at heart." The mom explained that she went to Lowe's to buy spray paint that bonds to plastic, then took the tree outside to paint it.
The mom admitted that she wanted the tree to be brown at first, but decided to use a darker green to replace the tree's original bright green hue. The star tree topper ended up looking gray, and the ornaments became different shades of gray and brown. "They're definitely giving organic modern vibes," the mom boasted.
Though the mom said she loved the way the tree turned out, TikTok users were less impressed — even ones that identify as "beige moms."
"I’m a beige mom but cmon!!" one person commented. "The kids love colors specially Christmas time! I have my living room 90s Christmas and my smaller living room neutrals "
Many also added that kids need colors in their lives. One TikToker wrote: "Yes! Gorgeous! Stunt your child’s development by turning anything colourful into a sad beige!!!"
Others questioned the mom's decision to expose her children to the chemicals in paint.
“'Go ahead and call me a sad beige mom for what i’m about to do'… girl if that’s your first sentence, maybe you shouldn’t do it. " another suggested.

The mom later uploaded another video saying that she doesn't care if she seems like a "sad beige mom," but she does care about the safety of her kid's toy (and also realized that maybe some color should be added).
She said that her daughter doesn't put ornaments in her mouth, but she created new ornaments, using clear ornaments and putting pink and purple paint inside. She also created another video in response to a comment on her first video that said "who doesn't love a gray star." She used a shimmery gold paint to paint over the gray-looking star.
