Most of us know of Sammy Davis Jr. from his role as a founding member of the infamous Rat Pack. Along with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford, the crooners ruled Hollywood from the comfort of their luxurious digs in Las Vegas. Starring in films and recording albums, the handsome men all became household names throughout the 1950s and '60s.
As the years went by, Davis remained a staple in the entertainment industry, even when his health began to fail him in the 1980s. Diagnosed with throat cancer, doctors recommended that he have surgery to remove his larynx. Though it was the best chance he had for survival, the singer refused to give up his voice and continued to perform for as long as he could possibly manage. Davis was given chemotherapy and radiation treatments, but would ultimately succumb to the disease in 1990.
Just months before that, however, you'd never realize he was in any pain at all as he performs his legendary cover of the Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles." Standing in the spotlight, Davis sounds as clear and soothing as ever as he shimmies around the stage with his bowler hat and casual tie. Knowing how much he was going through, and how soon he would be gone after, it's incredible to see that same old level of energy and pizazz as he charms the crowd.
