After Kim Silva retired from teaching at the American School for the Deaf, she decided to start teaching sign language to some unlikely new students: her cats!
Silva believed American Sign Language would help her deaf cat Bambi, a shelter rescue, live a better life. Amazingly, in no time at all, Bambi (along with her other two cats) picked up the language. While we've seen cats learn to skateboard and play basketball before, these intelligent cats take obedience to a whole new level.
In the video, the cats show off their impressive vocabulary. Among the words they know are: "come," "sit," "stay," "shake," "high five," "sleep," "canned food," "finish," and "dance." The cats don't exactly sign themselves, but they respond to Silva's hand commands.
Silva hopes the clip will inspire others to adopt deaf cats of their own.
While dogs do tend to jump right into something new, felines definitely tend to be even more observant. That's why these are some pretty amazing kitties. Of course, they've been practicing their sign language skills for a long time, so they're basically pros at this point. It's really cool to see just how skilled they are. Have you ever seen anything like this?!
