Here at LittleThings, we love exploring the unique and quirky places where people make their homes.
We’ve seen everything from itty-bitty tiny houses to treetop bungalows years in the making.
All of these homes are wildly different, but are alike in that they all provide shelter and a happy household to their residents.
The latest property crossing our radar is no different; it’s designed to be a safe, comfortable harbor for its occupants. That said, this space is definitely a bit out of the ordinary, even by our standards.
That’s because this home, fondly dubbed the Silohome, was built deep underground, in the depths of a decommissioned missile silo.
Luxurious and heavily secured, this property boasts five-star comfort and survivalist trappings in equal measure, for a dramatic, vertical space that wouldn’t be out of place in a science fiction movie.

The Silohome is located in Adirondacks of upstate New York, in the town of Saranac.
Over the course of 20 years, Bruce Francisco laboriously renovated the whole space.
He transformed it from a decommissioned relic of the Cold War to an extravagant and luxurious space that also offers the utmost privacy and security.

Originally, it was an Atlas-F Missile storage facility.
According to the Silohome’s Facebook page, the silo was built for $18 million in 1958, for the express purpose of storing a missile in the event of attack from abroad.
Seventy-two of these facilities were built all over the United States during the Cold War, each built on approximately 20 acres.

Underground, the silo is essentially a very comfortable bunker.
All of the Atlas-Fs include heavy reinforced doors and two levels of underground space for the missiles once stored here.
In the Silohome, the control center and storage space have been transformed into living quarters, full bedrooms, an elaborate kitchen, and bathrooms, all sweeping around one dramatic spiral staircase.

The primary purpose of the Silohome is to combine world-class luxury with the top-notch security of an underground vault designed to withstand a direct nuclear attack.
The Silohome website is billed as “Builder of Most Unique Secure Real Estate in the World,” and, while that’s a big claim, the evidence seems to back it up.
Experts say that the Atlas-F structure can withstand 200 pounds of force per square inch.

Francisco isn’t banking on just the sheer strength of the silo to protect inhabitants.
The setup at the Saranac property is highly secluded, with four wells, an option for video surveillance, and a private airstrip.
The silo itself is totally invisible, hidden from above by a “decoy house,” which is a fully functional mountain lodge.

The lodge is luxurious in its own right, featuring sweeping views, comfortable living areas, and porches to relax on.
The Silohome website, which also offers services for building a Silohome of your very own, emphasizes that this house is just an additional bonus to the silo itself.
The house hides the entrance to the silo from outside, and serves as a disguise for the underground space belowground.

From the aboveground house, the silo can be accessed with a futuristic door panel.
The residents can descend down the built-in spiral staircase, and enjoy the luxurious spaces concealed below.
Francisco takes advantage of the industrial-chic look of the massive concrete supports to create a modern, sculptural effect.

Well-lit, with blond hardwood floors and natural stone used for the countertops and bathrooms, the overall look of the space is surprisingly light and airy.
While most of us might not want a home without windows, we have to admit that, if you’re in the market for a bunker, this is probably the one you’d want.
So, if a zombie apocalypse ever hits, you’ll know where to find us!
