There’s always a risk that comes along with buying a house, because you can never be entirely sure if there are any hidden issues of something that has gone terribly wrong over the years that you haven’t been made aware of prior to the purchase.
Simon Marks, 37, thought he had found himself a great deal on a house. The sale went through without a hitch, and just a few short months later, Simon was in his new home unpacking his belongings.
Just as he was trying to fall asleep on one of his first nights in the house, he heard a dull sound that sounded like gravel scraping on metal coming from outside. He shrugged it off when the sound dissipated.
The next morning when he was trying to reverse his car out of the driveway, it kept getting stuck on something underneath it. After some time, his vehicle was finally able to reverse, and Simon was startled to discover what was happening with his driveway.
The concrete paving on the driveway had cracked into large chunks, and right before his eyes, it all began to sink and plummet into the earthy soil below.
After he was sure it was safe to do so, Simon got on the ground and began to try to dig up a piece of rusted metal that was underneath the mess. He couldn’t do too much all on his own, so he called his father, Gerald, to come over and help.
The pair dug into the ground and soon discovered what was underneath. It was a rectangular secret passageway with a metal ladder that led to darkness.
