Lea Rose Fiega of Massachusetts got sick with a serious case of COVID-19. Thankfully, she survived and recovered — but it was a close call.
One day, back at work and on her lunch break, Lea headed over to the convenience store near her office and bought a scratch-off lotto ticket from employee Abhi Shah for the $30 Diamond Millions lottery.
Since she was in a hurry, she quickly scratched off the numbers, took a glance at the result, and determined that she didn't win. She gave the losing ticket back to Abhi, whose parents own the convenience store, and asked him to throw it in the trash.
Lea went back to work, and for the next 10 days, the ticket sat in a trash can behind the counter.
Then, as Abhi was sorting through the discarded lottery tickets in the trash, he found Lea's — and realized she'd left one number completely unscratched.
It was the million-dollar-winning number.
