If you're a woman, then you already know that something as simple as walking down the street can mean being sexually harassed, threatened, called licentious names, followed or groped.
The worst part is that it happens so often, we women just get used to it. You get used to strangers shouting, "Hey, Baby!" Or men walking up to you and trying to touch you or even follow you.
It's terrifying, but what may even be worse than having to deal with this as a woman is having to deal with it as a girl, sometimes even as young as middle school.
When this woman walked around New York City for 10 hours and filmed her harassment it went viral because so many people could relate. While something like "hello," or "you look nice today," may seem innocent, the intention of catcallers is less innocent by far; the purpose of these calls is to make women feel uncomfortable and intimidate them. It's not really what a catcaller says so much as how he says it.
I know, I'm just preaching to the choir. The real question has always been: do men know? Yes, men are the perpetrators usually, but, at the same time, not all men catcall. On the flip side, since most men don't catcall and since most women don't get catcalled when they're with men, the average gentlemen doesn't really understand how scary and degrading it can be.
Cosmopolitan hooked up a GoPro to three different women and showed just what happens when women dare to walk down the street. However, what these catcallers don't know is that their boyfriends are watching the entire time.
