For the past 10 years, mother ducks have nested in the courtyard of the Glover Elementary School in Milton, MA, away from potential predators.
That means that if they want to leave the school, they need to be let out by a human.
Every year, Principal Sheila Kukstis lets out a mother duck and her hatchlings, usually at inconvenient times. The little ones need to reach water within 24 hours of hatching, and the principal even had to interrupt her Fourth of July festivities one year to let them out!
This year, a teacher heard the sound of beaks tapping against a window during a standardized exam. After it ended, all the students and staff lined the halls for the "Duck Run." The children line up inside and outside, and are very quiet and very still, as to not scare the mom and her little ones. This is how they form a pathway to a nearby pond!
The principal says that the yearly experience provides a valuable "hands-on" lesson for the children, who have another way they can appreciate nature!
