Kayla and Cody Jones had been married for four years when they decided to start their family. From the start, the Texarkana, Arkansas, couple knew Kayla would not be able to carry or deliver a baby.
When she was just 17 years old, Kayla had a tumor removed from her uterus. She and Cody began the process of in vitro fertilization. Their plan was to get a surrogate mother.
"It has been 10 years knowing I would have to use a surrogate to have children," Kayla told KSLA.
The couple asked Cody's mother, Patty Resecker, if she would be their surrogate. The 49-year-old grandmother-to-be eagerly volunteered.
"I think it is really special in that way — that she will actually be carrying her grand-baby," Cody said of his mother.
The family was already close, but it appears as if the pregnancy has only brought them closer.
The first embryo did not take, but the second implant was the charm: Patty revealed afterward that she was in fact pregnant. She is hoping for multiples, but Kayla is hoping for just one.
"My biggest concern is to make sure: not only is the baby healthy, but my mother-in-law stays healthy, too," added Kayla. "I got a good mother-in-law. Most people don't like their mother-in-law, but I got a good one."
The last time Patty was pregnant was about 20 years ago. The mom may be a seasoned pro, but it's still been a little while.
"I'm glad it is somebody I can trust," Kayla said.
