At first glance you might think that this cat has a silly haircut, but the real reason behind this Canadian Lynx's dreadlocked fur broke my heart.
This is Dances With Wolves, a beautiful big cat that lives at the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. The organization is one of the world's largest exotic cat sanctuaries that calls for the protection and saving of big cats that are in captivity.
According to the sanctuary, Dances With Wolves' original owner had her declawed with the intention of putting her in commercials and ads. Although declawing a wildcat might seem like a good idea, it's health affects can create lifetime of pain. Claws on cats play an intricate role not only in their own protection and feeding habits, but also during the grooming process. Without the claws needed to properly groom herself properly, poor Dances ended up with these painful, painful dreadlocks.
While undergoing a check up for possible arthritis in her paws, Dances was knocked out and the sanctuary was able to trim off the locks around her head and neck. Finally on the medication she needed and without the locks, Dances is now living a healthy and pain free life!
