When you find a wild animal in need, it's important to take them to the proper care facilities rather than attempt any treatment on your own. Unless you're a highly trained individual, it's best to let the pros take over. That's exactly what the folks at Raptor Education Group, Inc. in Antigo, WI, were able to provide when they were given an itty-bitty nest of ruby-throated hummingbirds after a storm.
Knocked from their spot in a tree, the poor things would not have lasted very long without their parents' protection as the rain continued to flow. Snuggling up together in the mossy little home, the facility provided some healthy snacks for the cuties while they waited for the weather to clear up. At this early a stage in their development, it was important to make sure they maintained a level of protein, nectar, and enzymes they would ordinarily find from their mom or dad. Using crushed and powdered insects, the tiny twosome seem to really enjoy when lunch time rolls around!
It's actually pretty hard to tell what they are just looking at in the footage at first, but as soon as they get a whiff of their meal, they pop their pint-size heads up and open their beaks as wide as they possibly can! Even more adorable is the frantic way they chow down on the tasty treat. It's so silly-looking, but it's also saving their lives.
The crew was able to successfully release the babies back into their habitat once the sun shined again, but I'm sure they won't be forgetting these precious patients anytime soon.
