‘Wheelchair Dad’ Who Was Paralyzed While Working Constructs Special Bunkbeds For His Kids

Dan Kotter, also known as "The Wheelchair Dad," is a carpenter who recently finished his dream project: a custom-built bunkbed for three of his six kids. For Dan, the project was "challenging" because he uses a wheelchair after an accident that occurred about 10 years ago and left him paralyzed. The dad told Good Morning America that it's "fun to see things come together and be able to show Andrea [his wife] and the kids what I can do."

Dan, 46, worked on the built-in bunkbed/playhouse that includes two beds and a third loft bed for his three youngest daughters, Marlee, Maisie, and Quinn.

On TikTok, his wife showcased the process and the final result, noting that it took about a year to complete the project and the year was also full of "health challenges" and "setbacks."

"I've watched him adapt and create new ways to do things that used to be so easy," she wrote on TikTok. In another caption, she explained that "Dan was paralyzed while building a home," but noted that "he is STILL an incredible builder!"

She also mentioned that Dan has given his daughters "an incredible gift": "Not only a DREAM bedroom, but the priceless lessons he is teaching them along the way."

On Dan's birthday, April 21, he unveiled the finished bunkbed setup. Andrea explained to GMA that she and her husband came up with the design together after she looked for inspiration on Pinterest.

She praised her husband for "taking the picture straight out of my head and creating it in real life."

"Thank you for building this dream for our little girls. The gift you have given our daughters is priceless," she captioned the video that showcased the bunkbed.
