You've probably heard that prunes can provide some relief if you're constipated — but is it actually true? Experts say it's not just an old wives' tale. Studies have also suggested that prune juice and prunes really can help alleviate constipation. A 2022 study published in medical journal The American Journal of Gastroenterology looked at prune juice as a treatment for chronic constipation.
In the study, 84 people with chronic constipation were either given prune juice or a placebo on a daily basis. The study found that the people who had the prune juice experienced relief.
"Prune intake significantly decreased hard and lumpy stools while increasing normal stool and not increasing loose and watery stools," the researchers wrote.
So if prune juice and prunes really can help relieve constipation, why is that the case?
Prunes are high in fiber — both insoluble and soluble fiber. Insoluble fiber can help "push things through your intestines faster," Dr. Alexander Jow, a gastroenterologist, told HuffPost.

Though prune juice isn't high in fiber like prunes are, according to Healthline, they are both high in sorbitol, which is a sugar alcohol that has a laxative effect.
