Cops from Manhattan’s 34th Precinct has their hands full on Thursday when they spotted an alligator trying to cross Ninth Ave. at W. 205th Street in Inwood. The police officers were able to corner the gator and keep him away from oncoming traffic and pedestrians until emergency services arrived.
"So this alligator was crossing 9th Ave in #Inwood…no, really. At 205 Str. Cops took him to Animal Control #whatnext," the precinct’s commanding officer tweeted, along with a photo.
The gator is now at Animal Care Centers of New York City where they're seeking placement for the animal with a wildlife rehabilitator.
Police sources told CBS2 investigators believe the alligator was a pet that was set loose.
Replying to a series of concerned citizens, the police did show a sense of humor about the bizarre nature of the free roaming gator.
"I heard he couldn't get a cab. And he wasn't thrilled with Uber either…" the NYPD 34th Precinct wrote on Twitter.
When another woman noted that it might be a crocodile, the police replied back: "Oh, ok. Then it makes much more sense that he'd be on 9th. That's more of a crocodile hangout than an alligator spot."
It takes a lot to make a New Yorker double take, but this is one interesting story. What would you do in this situation?
