There are so many reasons why Audrey Hepburn is considered one of the most beautiful women of all time — and a genuinely remarkable person.

All who knew her adored her, and described her as poised, kind, selfless, charming, generous, and extremely modest and humble.

In an interview with Molly Shea at Yahoo Beauty, Luca Dotti, Hepburn’s son, spoke about his new cookbook, Audrey at Home, and about the “natural instinct toward a healthy habit” that his mother always possessed.

Below, we share some of Hepburn’s favorite health and beauty tips, and some insight into her philosophy on wellness, as told by her son.

Tip #1: Stay Hydrated

“She insisted so much on everybody… drinking a lot of water,” said Dotti. “And that really, today, is so important for the support of everything.

He continued, “She was really about drinking a lot of water and eating a lot of vegetables.”

Tip #2: Cook In Season

And speaking of vegetables, Dotti revealed that his mother cooked, ate, and certainly lived by the seasons.

“She was always looking for seasonal vegetables, what was available at the market,” he said. “At our small market in Switzerland, it was by the seasons. And she had a very healthy vision of her own seasons.

“She wasn’t afraid at all of getting old… she really enjoyed her older years. And her style was related to the food. As she aged, she got rid of all the complicated recipes.”

Tip #3: Unwind With Detoxes

Hepburn also made sure to replenish her body regularly.

She had a detox once a month, and, according to Dotti, would use that time to eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, and yogurt.

“She did it… usually to get over a jetlag, because you feel bloated after many hours sitting on a plane,” he said. “She was coming back from trips in Africa and was exhausted — this would help with that.”

Tip #4: Appreciate Simple Recipes

“My mother was not a vegetarian,” said Dotti. “She ate meat, but very little, in little dose.”

Her favorite meal was pasta with tomato sauce — relatively easy to prepare, but classic, and robust with flavor.

“Pasta with tomato sauce may sound easy, but to make it well is difficult, and no two results are always the same,” he said. “Tomato sauce is not only tomatoes. Maybe with a little bit of potato, or carrot.”

And Hepburn sure loved her potatoes.

“She was Dutch, so potatoes were a big, big part of her diet… [and] her father was Irish. Potatoes for her, they were a sustainable thing,” said Dotti.

Tip #5: Live Every Day To The Fullest

Everything Audrey

Hepburn maintained an extremely positive attitude and outlook on life.

“Every time that she found something new, or went to a market, or got a new recipe, she wasn’t blasé,” said Dotti. “She was so excited, like a little girl. She took life by the day…she never sounded panicked by the idea of being sick.

“She was more worried about others, about us, about the kids… my mother, she was really interested in living the day.”
