Wild Baby Elephant Is Rescued From City Sewer

A baby elephant became trapped in a sewer. The narrow drain made of concrete did not make for an easy escape for the small calf. In Hambantota, Sri Lankan elephants and humans coexist peacefully together. It may be hard to imagine sharing a sidewalk or road with the large creatures, but it is because of this unspoken pact between human and animal that the elephant survived.

Video footage shows Good Samaritans working tirelessly to free the elephant. The concrete hole wasn't large enough to remove the baby without altering the opening. Men hammered away at the concrete with axes to widen the area. They worked together to create a rope harness, and finally, they used their collective strength to free the poor child. An elephant calf can weigh anywhere from between 200 to 268 pounds, these men were devoted to saving the helpless animal.

As soon as the calf was brought up to the ground, it was taken away to get medical attention. The little guy seemed to have broken its leg during the fall. It's simple stories like this that show humans and animals were meant to live together peacefully.
