Preparedness has always been important to me. Now that I’m a mom, it matters more than ever. Anything can happen, and my little guy depends on me to be able to handle whatever comes our way. Knowing that, I do many things to prepare for possible emergencies. One of the ways that I do that is to have a kit of emergency supplies always with us. Much of what I try to prepare for falls under one of two scenarios. We’re home and unable to leave, or we’re not home and unable to get back when we planned to. Now, there are countless possible events that could create one of these two situations, but luckily, these items will cover many of those all in one fell swoop. Here is a list of 10 items I keep in my infant’s emergency preparedness kit.

This is the most vital over-the-counter item to have on hand. Children are at risk of seizures if they spike a high fever. Fevers can go from mild to severe suddenly. Speak with their pediatrician and get their recommended dosing guidelines ahead of time, and keep that chart with the Tylenol.

It’s important to be able to track that temperature! A wrist on baby’s forehead can only tell you so much! It’s always best to have an accurate rectal temperature reading. I label my thermometers with a Sharpie, so there is no question about where they have been. This one says “butt” across it and can’t be confused with another thermometer I have that says “goat butt.”

With all of the supply shortages going on, I am terrified that diapers will be next. These cloth diapers are super easy to wash by hand, air-dry quickly, and are very adjustable. Even if you would never cloth-diaper by choice, having these as backup, in the event that things don’t go as planned, is a wise choice. They fit from approximately 6.6 to 33 pounds, which will cover the full diapering stage for most babies. They come with two liners for each diaper, but it doesn’t hurt to keep some extra on hand, just in case. The liners can also be used as burp cloths and are incredibly absorbent. I keep a wet bag along with the diapers, for storing soiled diapers and clothing until I can wash them.

The last thing anyone needs in an emergency is stomach issues from unclean water. Whether you need to hydrate to be able to nurse or you need to mix formula, a safe supply of clean drinking water is essential. You can’t be without it.
As a parent, you can never have enough wipes. Running out would be a disaster, in and of itself. Stock up. I guarantee you can’t have too many.

Laminated Copy of Baby’s Birth Certificate
This is in an ideal world. My kiddo is over 4 months old, and I have not received his yet. I’ve done lots of follow-up, and it’s apparently due to government staffing and administrative issues. As soon as it does come, I’ll be putting a laminated copy in with his emergency kit. This self-adhesive laminating paper is super easy to use and doesn’t require a laminating machine. Hopefully, the certificate will arrive by the time he needs to apply for his driver’s license.
Recent Picture of Our Family Together
In lieu of a birth certificate, this is my evidence that my child belongs to me and I didn’t just swipe him. A family picture is also important if anyone in the family gets separated and you need help looking for them. Laminate the picture, to keep it safe, as well.
