Since 2023 is already the year of Barbie, with the film coming out starring Margot Robbie, it makes perfect sense that the popular doll brand would expand a little further in terms of inclusivity.
Inside Edition reports that the world’s first Barbie with Down syndrome will hit store shelves to give children of all ages the opportunity to play and quite possibly see themselves in the brand's new inclusive doll.
“This doll is breaking barriers by creating the first fashion doll with Down syndrome. Allowing more children to project their future through fashion doll play and imagine what is possible,” explains Kim Culmone, Barbie senior vice president and head of design.
Taking proper care in the overall design of this new Barbie was at the top of mind for Mattel, Barbie’s parent company, as they worked in close partnership with the National Down Syndrome Society.
“Through this collaboration, we were able to ensure that the doll and all the design elements and details were an accurate representation of a person with Down syndrome,” Lisa McKnight from the Barbie Corporation notes.

The news outlet reports that the 64-year-old global doll brand took the time to consult with medical professionals to get essential details such as the doll’s frame accurate. The Barbie with Down syndrome is shorter than previous dolls and has a longer torso as well.
