Athletic greatness does not come without risk. The nation watched in horror earlier this year when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the football field. Eighteen-year-old Bronny James had the same experience during practice for USC’s basketball team on Monday July 24, 2023. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency care.
Bronny is the eldest son of NBA legend LeBron James. He committed to playing for the Trojans in May. His family issued a statement about the incident and gave an update on his condition.
“Yesterday while practicing Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest," the statement began. "Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information."
The family concluded their statement by expressing their gratitude. "LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
At this time, the university has chosen not to comment on the incident out of respect for the privacy of Bronny.

Damar took to Twitter to express his support for the James family during this difficult time. "Prayers to Bronny & The James family as well," he tweeted. "Here for you guys just like you have been for me my entire process." Damar has not returned to football since his medical emergency, but was cleared to do so in April.
