Young Girl Anxiously Waits To See Whether Surgery Restored Her Eyesight

Rose is a young girl who lost her vision to cataracts. This is a widespread issue in her home country of Malawi, where a reported "160,000 people […] have bad vision due to cataracts."

And without the treatment necessary to recover? It can feel as though there isn't any hope. The short video goes on to explain that "50,000 people are blind because they can't afford [this] surgery."

When asked what it would be like to have her eyesight back, Rose responded, "Like my friends, I could go to school and learn to write."

It’s utterly heartbreaking to imagine any child being denied their basic right to an education — especially when this health issue is so easily remedied for those who are privileged enough to receive the surgery.

But there’s hope! A U.K.-based charity called Sightsavers is working with fighters like Rose to change all of that. Like the baby who saw her parents for the first time and the 12-year-old girl who experienced something similar when seeing her mom, both philanthropy and technology are helping so many people every day.

After the miraculous surgery, the doctor confirms that, "Every passing day, [Rose's vision] will get better."
