Chinese Doctors Find Unusual Way To Save A Man’s Severed Hand

Surgeons in China found an unusual way to save a man’s hand after a work accident severed it.

Doctors have performed many incredible surgeries before, like the Haitian surgeon who made medical history by separating two conjoined twins. There's also the surgeons who were able to successfully operate on a baby in the womb. But, this one (shown in the video below) is unlike anything else.

The Chinese doctors weren’t immediately able to reattach the man’s left hand to his arm because the tissue would’ve died. Instead, they attached the hand close to the patient’s ankle and kept it there for a month. They performed the same surgery on another patient in 2013.

"Under normal temperatures, a severed finger needs to resume blood supply within 10 hours, but that time is even shorter for a separated limb,” said Dr. Tang Juyu, head of microsurgery at the Xiangyu Hospital in Changsha. “If a limb is short of blood for too long, its tissues die and it will be unsalvageable.”

The latest patient – named only as Zhoo – lost his hand after a factory blade machine at his job chopped it off. He underwent a 10-hour operation to reattach his hand. He was quickly able to move his fingers, but will need more time until he’s able to fully use his hand again.
